With summer getting nearer, the risks of sunburn are highly increasing and proper precaution should be taken to prevent it. Generally too much exposure to the sun causes sunburn. A long walk in the hot summer, or lying on the beach for a long time may cause sunburn. It may occur any time during the year, but the chances of occurrence are more in summer. Although it is not fatal, still it can cause a great deal of discomfort that may last for a long time. More than 70% children and 1/3rd of adults face sunburn every year, according to health surveys.
let’s take a look at what causes sunburns, its signs and preventing procedures. Causes of sunburn-
- It is usually a burn on the skin which is caused due to ultraviolet radiation. The burn leads to inflammation of the skin. The injury may start within 30 minutes after exposure. Although how soon it starts depends on the skin complexion if the person and sun intensity along with time.
- UV rays have 3 types. UVA and UVB are the 2 wavelengths in the spectrum of light. Among them, both the rays are responsible for skin wrinkles and premature aging of skin by altering your DNA. While UVB is more harmful and may even cause skin cancer. Improper tanning in tanning beds also leads to exposure of UBA and UVB.
- People travelling to the southern part of the USA which is closer to the equator and also at high altitudes are exposed to risks of sunburn. Although limited exposure helps in manufacturing vitamin D, but high exposure is harmful.
Symptoms of sunburn-
Mild sunburn results in redness of skin and little bit of irritation and pain. It starts after 2-6 hours of exposure and one can notice the peak effects after 12 hours. Severe sunburn results in blistering of skin and burning, fluid loss and also an imbalance of electrolytes and infection.
Untreated sunburn may even damage vital organs. Other common symptoms are fever, nausea, chills, skin loss, peeling of skin, blisters and also sun rash.
Precaution from sunburn and relief procedures-
- Let’s take a look at some tips for keeping you safe when you are out in the sun. First of all, remember that the sun rays are strongest from 10 am – 4 pm. Try to stick to the shadows or stay indoors by that time. When you are out in summer, wear proper clothing like hats with broad brims, long sleeved shirts or pants and sunglasses with UV protection.
- When on the beach or participating in some outdoor games, applying sunscreen which has an SPF level of at least 30. Take it with you and reapply every two hours if you are sweating or swimming. Still, if you face sunburn, temporary relief procedures are there.
Before taking a bath, apply cold compresses for soothing the burn. To ease skin irritation, rub gels or creams that has menthol, aloe or camphor. Also, refrigerate the cream before using.Remember to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, fruit juice or other fluids. Most importantly until the sunburn heals, stay inside and avoid the sun.
